LUCKY SAVORED a moment of relief when he received Han’s message. L’Aria was safe… well, safe-ish, and Han was on his way to rescue him and Zhevi. Couldn’t get much better than that.

“Luccan!”

Han sounded peeved—not so great. What had he done wrong now? Oh. Yeah. Got all distracted. “Sorry, Uncle. Are you getting this? What do you want me to think about?”

“Me, Luccan. Think about me. Fairly obvious.” Despite that last, Han sounded less annoyed.

“You’re reminding me of Thurlock at the moment.”

“Yeah. I’m reminding me of Thurlock too.”

“Are you okay, Han?”

“Keep up the messages. I’m getting closer.”

Lacking a good idea of what to say, Lucky quoted a line from a television commercial he’d heard back in Valley City. “Can you hear me now?”

“Again.”

“Can you hear me now?”

“Good. Once more.”

“Can you—?”

“Yes, I can. Be quiet now.”

Han’s voice—the physical one—had come through the hole in the door, and Lucky’s hope soared. He looked around and found his best friend and cellmate had fallen into some semblance of sleep. He touched Zhevi’s hand and whispered, “Wake up! Get up, Zhev. Han’s here for us. He already has L’Aria with him!”
